Sleek Geeks 8pm – 8.30pm ABC
Thursday 31 January
Sleek Geeks is a six-part factual series featuring Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and maths whizz Adam Spencer. Developed off the back of their successful stage show of the same name, the series is an everyday look at science in Dr Karl and Adam's eclectic and energetic style. The Sleek Geeks mix science with humour as they set out to answer some of the perplexing scientific mysteries we encounter on a daily basis. Sleek Geeks harks back to the days of Julius Sumner Miller and his memorable catch-cry: "Why is it so?" Like Sumner Miller, the Sleek Geeks' mission is to reveal the surprising science that lies hidden in our homes, offices and backyards. Based loosely around themes such as 'Time', 'Mind Games' and 'Senses' Sleek Geeks provides moments of deep thought to the most arcane and bizarre ideas imaginable.

WHAT ABOUT THIS DVD
THIS IS ENGLAND

1983 was a time before MTV and Gameboy, when there was very little to keep the disenchanted British youth anaesthetised. As unemployment figures rose and Youth Training Schemes fell, the kids refused to toe the factory line and spilled out onto the streets.Rockers, New Romantics, Mods, Punks and Skinheads stood shoulder to shoulder, hissing and spitting in the discos, precincts and subways of the working class towns across the nation. This is England tells the story of Shaun, a 12-year-old kid growing up without a father in the north of England. Set during the summer holidays of 1983, the film charts his rites of passage from a scruffy misfit grieving the loss of his father into a shaven-headed thug whose anger and pain are embraced by the local skinhead fraternity. With a shell of a mother and no father to guide him, Shaun seems set for self-destruction but it is not long before things turn sour with his new-found 'friends' and Shaun discovers that violence is the coward's answer.

THE IT CROWD
The IT Crowd centres on Roy, Moss and Jen. They make up the I.T. department of Reynholm Industries. However, while their social betters work upstairs in fantastic surroundings, Roy, Moss and Jen work in a horrible dark basement underneath it all. PERSON OF THE YEAR
TONY WILSON / RIP.

Born Anthony H. Wilson on February 20, 1950 in Salford, England, he went on to become a renowned broadcast journalist, band manager, record label executive and nightclub owner.

As the Factory Records boss, he was responsible for signing legendary bands including Joy Division and New Order to his label.

Also, as owner of the renowned Hacienda nightclub in Manchester, he played a key role in the Madchester scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s that mixed indie rock and dance music and included artists such as Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses.

The Hacienda, which hosted Madonna's first UK television appearance in 1983, was forced to close in the late 1990s as it was losing money allegedly because its patrons were taking ecstasy rather than buying drinks at the club.

Wilson reportedly became involved in the Manchester music scene in the 1970s when hosting the culture and music programme 'So It Goes' on Granada Television.

After covering a Sex Pistols performance at the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall in June 1976, he described the experience as "nothing short of an epiphany" and booked the band for one of the first television broadcasts of British punk rock.

These aspects of Wilson's life were later chronicled in the semi-fictional 2002 feature film '24 Hour Party People', in which he was portrayed by British actor Steve Coogan.

More recently, Wilson was involved in In The City, a yearly music festival and conference that takes place in Manchester and New York City, which he co-founded with his partner Yvette Livesey.

In 2005 he launched F4, the fourth incarnation of the Factory Records label.

Earlier this year, the music mogul was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery to have one of his kidneys removed.

From signing the likes of Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays, to being a general support of exciting an innovative music, Wilson established himself as a true indie hero.

EVENT OF THE YEAR -
JOHN HOWARD LOSING THE ELECTION AND HIS OWN SEAT!

SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR-
Researchers Turn Skin Cells to Stem Cells
Using a virus to reprogram skin cells, two teams of scientists managed to skirt the greatest ethical issue facing regenerative medicine -- the destruction of human embryos. Groups led by Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University and Junying Yu of the University of Wisconsin coaxed a type of skin cell called fibroblasts into forming muscle, heart, fat and nerve tissues without using any eggs. Unfortunately, the hijacked cells often became tumors. Following up on his initial discovery this November, Yamanaka told Nature Biotechnology that by inserting three growth genes instead of four, the lab-grown flesh can be controlled without becoming cancerous.

Nouvelle Vague Presents New Wave - Various Artists

French trio Nouvelle Vague are well known for their covers of songs by new wave artists. In fact, research shows you’re 74% more likely to have heard one of these covers than one of their original songs. So, who better to compile a two disc collection of covers by new wave bands?

Among the twenty four tracks that make up this collection, you’ll find an abundance of great songs. There are too many to list but some of the stand-outs include, Satisfaction (I Can’t Get Me No) by Devo, Antena’s unnerving version of The Boy From Ipanema, Elton Motello’s deviant reworking of Ça Plane Pour Moi, Walk On By by The Stranglers, I Heard It Through The Grapevine by The Slits and a live version of The Velvet Underground’s Sister Ray from Joy Division

LCD Soundsystem - 45:33

45:33 isn't really an album. But it isn't really a track. And it's a bit big to be an EP. Originally released as a download only 'track / continuous mix' in 2006, this LCD Soundsystem project consists of six tracks and, for its physical release, three bonuses. So it's a nine-track single or a mixtape or... oh, what the hell. It's James Murphy. So it's going to be good, whatever it is.
