TOP TEN
Robbed! CNN's ---- The Screening Room's top ten Oscars that weren't.

1. Stanley Kubrick's double snub
1968/1964

In two equally baffling instances, the last true auteur's work was denied the prize. Cold War classic "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" lost out to George Cukor's "My Fair Lady" while his genre-defining sci-fi epic "2001: A Space Odyssey" was beaten by Carol Reed's threadbare "Oliver!" Glossy Hollywood musicals hailed above two of the most influential movies ever made: are you serious? Truly, this is Oscar's greatest travesty.

2. "Citizen Kane," denied best picture
1941

It has been topping critics' lists since its release over 60 years ago, but this work of cinematic genius left the 1941 Oscars almost empty handed. Nominated for nine, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, "Citizen Kane" was beaten to the prize by "How Green Was My Valley," a sentimental epic about Welsh miners.

3. Martin Scorsese, ever the bridesmaid
1976/1980/1990

Finally recognized last year for his work on "The Departed," for years it looked like Scorsese would always play bridesmaid to some distinctly mediocre brides. The three biggest Oscar crimes against Marty: "Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull" and "Goodfellas." For the latter, he was beaten by Kevin Costner for "Dances With Wolves." Fair enough, it's the only Costner-helmed film that isn't utterly abysmal, but better than Scorsese's best? We don't think so.

4. James Dean: Rebel without an Oscar
1955/1956

The only actor to receive more than one posthumous nomination, Dean still failed to secure the statue, despite turning in three amazing performances in one year. Nominated for his roles in "East of Eden" and "Giant," and overlooked for the iconic "Rebel Without a Cause," three performances that put him into Hollywood folklore as an acting great, he lost out second time round to Yul Brynner in "The King and I." Is it us or are the sentimental musicals trumping the all-time classics?

5. Alfred Hitchcock's Academy curse
1958

One of the greatest directors of all time, Hitchcock never won the best director award. Nominated just four times, he was only beaten by the finest directors of the day, including Billy Wilder and Elia Kazan. But how could the nomination committee overlook "Vertigo"? Today it's considered one of his true masterpieces. No nomination for Hitchcock, and instead the academy hand the award to Vincente Minnelli, the director of "Gigi" -- another tooth-gratingly glitzy musical.

6. "Pulp Fiction" and Morgan Freeman get Gump-ed
1994

Whether you like "Forrest Gump" or not, it's hard to defend the decision that saw Tom Hanks take his second acting Oscar ahead of the definitive performance of one of Hollywood's elder statesmen, Morgan Freeman, in Frank Darabont's "Shawshank Redemption." And as for the Academy passing over "Pulp Fiction" or its director, Quentin Tarantino in favor of a comfortable family flick? That left us speechless. Where's the Academy's court of appeal?
Don't Miss

* The Oscars: Best Foreign Language Film
* The politics behind the Academy Awards
* The cost of the Academy Awards

7. Robert Duvall steals the show, but is robbed of the award
1979

It's hard to stand out in a cast that has Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen and Dennis Hopper in it, let alone when the project's directed with powerful skill by Francis Ford Coppola, but the wild ravings of Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore stand out as the highlight in the excellent and affecting "Apocalypse Now." We hate the smell of Oscar injustice in the morning.

8. "LA Confidential" is sunk by a blockbuster
1997

Ok, it was an impressive venture, and the technical frills were unrivalled at the time, but "Titanic" just wasn't the best film of the year. A flimsy script, plus performances far from the actors' best, failed to deter voters: the movie picked up a record 11 awards. Versus "LA Confidential," or even the impressive "Good Will Hunting," it simply doesn't float.

9. Al Pacino's best apparently not good enough
1976

Pacino may have descended into a constant stream of shouting in his later roles (something that can be seen in abundance in "Any Given Sunday" or "Devil's Advocate"), but his magnetic performance as sensitive Michael Corleone in "The Godfather" sees him at his compelling best. Joel Grey's performance in "Cabaret" (more musicals! Argh!) is nothing if not annoying, and certainly not a patch on Pacino's finest hour.

10. "Brokeback Mountain" wins everything but an Oscar
2005

In the approach to the Academy Awards it had been winning major prizes, scooping the best picture BAFTA and Golden Globe and earning director Ang Lee a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, but when it came to the Oscars, the movie mysteriously missed out. "Crash," the actual winner, is not a bad film, but it pales in comparison to the sensitive and highly emotional "Brokeback Mountain."

That Mitchell and Webb Look
9.35pm – 10.05pm ABC1 Wednesday 13 February

BAFTA-nominated comedians Robert Webb and David Mitchell (Peep Show, That Mitchell And Webb Sound) invite you into their lopsided world of sketch comedy. That Mitchell and Webb Look is peopled with strange and wonderful characters, the likes of Sir Digby Chicken Caesar, Biscuit Telekinesis Man, Angel Summoner and BMX Bandit. "One of the key selling points of That Mitchell and Webb Look is that it doesn't just consist of running characters and it hasn't got many obvious catch-phrases," say David and Rob. "At least half the show is made up of one-off sketches with characters we don't bring back, where the comedy is idea driven: the Anxious Nazis, concerned they seem to be on the side of the baddies; the Old School Vicar, uptight, condescending, bitter and arrogant; and Chip and Pin, a double act with a name they felt sure would get them work - to name but a few.." The series also features a strong supporting cast including Olivia Colman (Green Wing, Look Around You); James Bachman (Hyperdrive); and Paterson Joseph (Peep Show) with material from Mitchell and Webb and award-winning writers John Finnemore (Dead Ringers), Sam Bain (Peep Show) and Jesse Armstrong (The Thick of It). In episode one you will see a number of skits such as Numberwang; Friends of Moneypenny; The Snooker Commentators talk about booze; How What Not to Look Like; Behind The Scenes - How What Not to Look Like; Angel BMX; The Honeymoon's Over - Church; The Snooker Commentators talk more about Booze; Nazis Two; Big Talk; Behind The Scenes - The Banana Dance part one and two.

TOP TEN
- Top 10 Things You Can Do At Home To Conserve Water

1. Follow your local water use restrictions. The most important thing you can during times of drought is to follow your local water municipalities' current water restrictions. You can even get ahead of the curve and begin to conserve before restrictions are needed.

2. Refit your plumbing. Determine the water output of your plumbing (faucets, showers, etc.) and either replace fixtures with newer, low flow models or install water-saving devices. Showerheads in new plumbing since 1992 are required to be 2.5 gallons per minute or less. Some cities, counties, or utilities may even offer rebates for replacing older fixtures.

Place a water-filled bottle in your toilet tank to reduce the amount of water needed to fill it. Using low-flow devices at the tap can reduce consumption as much as 50 percent. Replace older toilets that use from 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush with new ultra low-flush toilets that use only 1.6 gallons per flush. Installing a 0.5 gallon-per-minute faucet aerator will reduce the amount of water used by 77 percent compared to traditional 2.2 gallon-per-minute faucets.

3. Check for leaks and repair them. Leaks account for a significant portion of water used nationwide. In a typical home, leaks amount to about 15 percent of all household indoor water use.

Check tub and sink faucets for drips and replace washers and “O-rings” as necessary. Put food coloring in your toilet tank and watch if the coloring shows up in the toilet bowl before flushing. If so, replace the leaking flap. Turn off all water to your home and look at the readout dial on your water meter. If the dial moves, you have a leak. Check pipes coming into the house for leaks and have them repaired immediately. Don’t forget to check outside faucets and garden hoses. One undetected leak can waste 500 gallons of water per month.

4. Use indoor water wisely. Approximately half of all indoor water is used in the bathroom. The primary uses of water in the bathroom are flushing toilets and showering or bathing.

Turn off water while lathering, shampooing, shaving and brushing your teeth. Reducing showering time to five minutes can save an average of 20 to 40 gallons of water.

5. Know your plumbing. Take time to locate your main water shut-off valve and the water meter in your yard. Knowing where the main shut-off is can potentially prevent the loss of thousands of gallons of water.

6. Use dry cleanup. Dry clean up methods can be used to reduce both indoor and outdoor water use. Not only do they conserve water, dry clean up methods also protect the environment by reducing the amount of pollutants that run down the drain and enter our waterways.

Instead of hosing off your driveway and patio, use a broom to sweep away debris. Using dry cleanup methods not only saves lots of water, but also prevents oils and debris from entering public waterways.

7. Take advantage of free water. Collect the water you would otherwise allow to run down the drain, soak into the ground or evaporate for future use.

Catch rainwater from your gutters and use it to water your flowers and vegetables. Check if your city or county sells rain barrels at a reduced cost. Collect water from the bath/shower while waiting for it to heat up; use for watering plants. Catch water from air conditioners and heat pumps. You can collect 100 gallons of water or more during the summer by collecting the water produced by one heat pump.

8. Use appliances wisely. Maximize your use of water consuming appliances. Choose high efficiency appliances, such as Energy Star rated clothes or dishwashers, when replacements are needed.

Run washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads to maximize efficiency. Install water-saving dishwashers, front-loading washing machines and other appliances that help save water. Water-saving dishwashers use about 4 gallons of water, about one-third of the water needed by a standard dishwasher. Some water-conserving clothes washers use about 30 gallons of water for a 19-pound load, about the same that standard washers use for an eight-pound load.

9. Use a commercial carwash that recycles water. Many commercial carwashes recycle their wash water. By reclaiming and filtering the water used, commercial carwashes significantly reduce the amount of water required to clean each vehicle (between 8 and 32 gallons per vehicle according to the International Carwash Association).

Hosing your car off in the driveway can waste a significant amount of water. On the average, a “green” carwash can save from 23 to 42 gallons of water per wash because the water is filtered and used again.

10. Avoid using sink disposals for food scraps. Composting food scraps is much more economical than using a garbage disposal. In addition to conserving water, you can create rich compost material to help your garden retain soil moisture too.

Garbage disposals use several gallons of water needlessly during operation, plus they can add 50 percent to the volume of solids in your septic tank. Disposals can use around 11 gallons of water per minute.
