Justin Simon (Invisible Conga People) - Top Ten (Early Winter 07)
1.
Heat
Kind of embarrassing, but I haven't had working heat in close to seven years. I lived in what amounted to a treehouse in Tokyo for a few years (dirt cheap apartment with no heat, hot water or bath) and then in an old Gramercy tenement run by two assholes who refused to turn on the boiler. But my new apartment is toasty. I love heat. Never take heat for granted.
2.
Yura Yura Teikoku, "Hollow Me" album (2007)
This is a totally brilliant concept record of experimental pop that sounds like nothing else. Band songwriter Sakamoto Shintaro said he was hoping it would make listeners feel "lethargic." The bpms are sluggish and two songs have saxophone solos. One song is basically a free jazz/noise jam with an extended, delayed-out shakuhachi solo...?! All the lyrics are somehow related to the overall theme of feeling empty or 'hollow' and the songs were written to "never reach a destination." And it was in the TOP TEN in Japan! Granted, only for about a day, but still, the TOP TEN! What a coup. You need this.
3.
Chirgilchin live
I went to see this group of Tuvan throat singers with my parents a couple months ago. They performed in a beautiful old church in Jersey, and I was completely spellbound from start to finish. Their CDs don't do justice to the live experience, but they're still worth picking up.
4.
Chinatown Ping Pong Club
I went to this place for the first time a couple days ago. The space is in the basement of a nondescript office building in Chinatown and the elevator opens into a big room filled with tables. The night I went they were having a tournament and dudes of all ages and ethnicities were decked out in athletic gear, grunting and jumping around. Everyone seemed to know each other. A friend and I took a table in the back of the room, and an elderly Chinese gentleman carefully stringing some sort of fishing net together in a chair next to us quietly watched us play. Eventually, in a thick JAMAICAN accent (he raised his family there), he introduced himself as "Coach Young," former world champion, current retiree, local coach and aspiring guru. He lectured us on how to live our lives, and described in great detail his eight children and their many impressive accomplishments. Apparently, one son works in the music industry, once wrote songs for Mariah Carey, and made 5 million dollars off a string of hits, but was "stupid, very very dumb" and blew all his money on fancy stuff.
5.
Secret bar, in small room south of Canal Street, capacity 11
OK, so this is kind of unfair since it's a secret (and I've taken an oath of silence), but I'm bringing it up in the hopes that someone will read this and want to do something similar, and save us all from boring old 21st century NYC life. Some friends, inspired by the closet-sized, members-only bars in Shinjuku's "Golden Gai," found a tiny room in the back of an office building, installed a miniature bar, got a karaoke machine, decorated the walls and made a secret space for friends to come hang out at. Lots of fun and it pretty much pays for itself. Genius, right? I've always hated karaoke (and I lived in Japan for six years!) but this place made me lighten up.
6.
Superfamily party at APT on Saturdays
Kind of like the dance party equivalent to the aforementioned ping pong place, at least in terms of the mixed age/race makeup. The music is always really good and they miraculously transform the usually Superboring first floor of APT into a fun space for dancing. Actually, now that I think of it, HOLY SHIT, Superfamily should do a party at the PING PONG CLUB! That would be amazing.
7.
Dancing guy in front of Starbucks on 23rd St. and 3rd Avenue
I wouldn't want to have a laugh at the expense of someone with a mental illness (and I live a few blocks from Bellevue, so there are lots of sad crazies hanging out in my neighborhood), but after extensive research I have concluded that this guy is merely an eccentric, so he's fair game. He's a buff, older (50s) Italian dude who dresses in gym attire, keeps a boombox in a wagon on the front of his bicycle, parks in front of the Starbucks on the corner, blasts his radio, and does hysterical dances in the middle of the sidewalk to the music. Actually, really only one dance, a kind of karate-esque boogie (picture sumo wrestlers getting ready to pounce but doing rhythmic hand chops while they bounce softly up and down), and he frequently punctuates his movements with loud claps and Michael Jackson-like "WHOO!"s. The most amazing thing is that he faces the Starbucks window while he dances, and uses the pane as a mirror to check out his own moves!! He's totally oblivious to the people staring at him from inside the shop, cracking up. He takes frequent breaks and leans on his bicycle in a gangster-ish, "cool" way, half-standing up but with his legs crossed, with his sunglasses down low on the bridge of his nose, scanning his surroundings with a "What do you think YOU'RE LOOKING AT, BUDDY?" expression. I pass this Starbucks on my daily trip to the local post office (I have a box), and whenever I'm in a bad mood, this guy instantly cheers me up. I'd like to think that forty years ago, this neighborhood was a cool community of sidewalk dancers and this guy was the ringleader, and now he's just carrying on the tradition.
8.
No Ordinary Monkey party at China Club
Went last night for the first time in a while and was reminded how awesome this party is. The location is weird (Chinese restaurant in the basement of a Wall Street office building...), the dance floor never gets too packed so there' s plenty of room for boogying, and the relative obscurity of the party keeps the douche bags away. The Monkeys keep the lights low, fill the room with smoke and play really good records through their recently purchased, RIDICULOUS sound system...basically the perfect dance party. It's the perfect size too, so...don't come!! :)
9.
The Cats of Mirikitani
Good documentary about an acquaintance (my mom was the nurse at his retirement home). Saw this with my bandmate and we both cried.
10.
Commercial hip-hop dance party with famous actress at corny club by Grand Central Station
I always wanted to make an inside joke on the internet, probably the most inappropriate place ever for one, no? Pretty funny, right Saheer? Ok, it's out of my system now.

Subject: The Yetnikoff Interview
His book may have been a disappointment, but this interview is
FANTASTIC!
Don't get bogged down in his defense of payola. Utterly ridiculous. If
you don't think the independent gatekeeper game was payola, then you
were an attorney advising these people how to skate between the lines of
the law. But, after giving his insight into Frederic Dannen and "Hit
Men", Walter goes off on BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN!
Why did he need all that money? Can he really blame his lawyer and his
attorney? Does that play when you're fifty seven years old?
As for Bruce's records... The last three suck, and "The Rising" was not
a call to action and by the way, the last Bon Jovi record WAS BAD TOO!
Shit, who is this guy speaking English in a business where the insider
press says everything's groovy and the executives are superstars? Sure,
Walter's not in the game, so it's easier to speak the truth, but AT
LEAST HE'S SPEAKING THE TRUTH!
I love it when he says the majors, which don't really exist, would wave
a magic wand and get rid of the Internet if they could. And what about
Guy Hands running EMI? A hit record is the solution to Warner's
problems, not some new technology.
Sure, he takes a shot at Donnie and Michele, and Tommy too. But give
him credit, he's not worried about retribution, maybe he's too old, he's
PISSED!
And maybe things were better when Walter Yetnikoff ran Sony Music.
Because it was about the music more than the trappings.
This guy is larger than life. Not with airs, like Clive Davis. Or faux
hipness, I'm just a guy from the street, like Jimmy Iovine. Rather,
Walter's got CHARISMA! You want more, you want to hang with this guy.
Watch this and tell me if you feel otherwise.
A breath of fresh air.

TOP TEN
things the food corporations, whose products dominate grocery store shelves across the United States and other countries, absolutely do not want you to know.
1. The ingredients listed on the label aren't the only things in the food. Cancer-causing chemicals such as acrylamides may be formed in the food during high-heat processing, yet there's no requirement to list them on the label. Residues of solvents, pesticides and other chemicals may also be present, but also do not have to be listed. The National Uniformity for Food Act, currently being debated in the U.S. Congress, would make it illegal (yes, illegal) for states to require cancer warnings on foods that contain cancer-causing chemicals (such as California's Proposition 65.) See articles on the Food Uniformity Act.
2. Monosodium glutamate (MSG), which is added to thousands of food and grocery products through a dozen different innocent-sounding ingredients, imbalances endocrine system function, disabling normal appetite regulation and causing consumers to keep eating more food. This chemical not only contributes to nationwide obesity, it also helps food companies boost repeat business. See articles on MSG.
3. MSG is routinely hidden in foods in these ingredients: yeast extract, torula yeast, hydrolyzed vegetable protein and autolyzed yeast. Thousands of common grocery products contain one or more of these chemical taste enhancers, including nearly all "vegetarian" foods such as veggie burgers (read labels to check). See Food manufacturers hide dangerous ingredients in everyday foods by using confusing terms on the label.
4. ADHD in children is caused almost entirely by the consumption of processed food ingredients such as artificial colors and refined carbohydrates. Eighty percent of so-called ADHD children who are taken off processed foods are cured of ADHD in two weeks. See articles on ADHD.
5. The chemical sweetener aspartame, when exposed to warm temperatures for only a few hours, begins to break down into chemicals like formaldehyde and formic acid. Formaldehyde is a potent nerve toxin and causes damage to the eyes, brain and entire nervous system. Aspartame has been strongly linked to migraines, seizures, blurred vision and many other nervous system problems. See articles on aspartame.
6. Most food dips (like guacamole dip) are made with hydrogenated oils, artificial colors and monosodium glutamate. Many guacamole dips don't even contain avocados.
7. Plastic food packaging is a potent health hazard. Scientists now know that plastics routinely seep the chemical bisphenol A into the food, where it is eaten by consumers. Cooking in plastic containers multiplies the level of exposure. Bisphenol is a hormone disruptor and can cause breast formation in men and severe hormonal imbalances in women. It may also encourage hormone-related cancers such as prostate cancer and breast cancer. See Plastics chemical bisphenol A found to promote prostate cancer in animal studies.
8. Milk produced in the United States comes from cows injected with synthetic hormones that have been banned in every other advanced nation in the world. These hormones help explain why unusually young teenage girls develop breasts at such a young age, or why hormone-related cancers like prostate cancer are being discovered in unprecedented numbers. In order to protect Monsanto, the manufacturer of hormones used in the industry, the USDA currently bans organic milk producers from claiming their milk comes from cows that were not treated with synthetic hormones. Even organic milk is now under fire as the Organic Consumers Association says Horizon milk products are falsely labeled as organic. See Horizon milk, Wild Oats named in consumer boycott of "false" organic products. (The solution to all this? Drink raw almond milk instead. Make it yourself with a Vitamix, water and a nut milk bag.)
9. Most grocery products that make loud health claims on their packaging are, in reality, nutritionally worthless (like meal replacement shakes, instant chocolate milk, etc.). The most nutritious foods are actually those the FDA does not allow to make any health claims whatsoever: fresh produce. See articles on food labeling.
10. Food manufacturers actually "buy" shelf space and position at grocery stores. That's why the most profitable foods (and hence, the ones with the lowest quality ingredients) are the most visible on aisle end caps, checkout lanes and eye-level shelves throughout the store. The effect of all this is to provide in-store marketing and visibility to the very foods and beverages that promote obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and other degenerative conditions now ravaging consumers around the world. See articles on food marketing.
